A Real-World Scenario: The "Gym Frustration"
I recently met Arjun in my clinic. The 34-year-old lad was very disappointed. He frequented the gym, one of the best in his locality, Andheri, and ate clean. Despite getting his macros right and exercising till he couldn’t take it anymore, the ‘spare tyre’ around his midriff refused to budge.
“Doctor, I feel like a fraud. I look fit in clothes, but at the beach, I hide my stomach. My hard work doesn’t show,” he lamented.
Arjun didn’t need weight loss; he needed sculpting. We performed a High-Definition VASER on his abdomen. We removed just 3 litres of fat but focused entirely on “etching” the grooves of his six-pack. Three months later, the mental burden was gone. He finally looked as athletic as he felt. Now you understand why I recommend the procedure, not just for the physique, but for the confidence it instils.
Preparing for the Procedure
Success actually starts before you enter the operating theatre. When you book your procedure with me, I will provide you with a detailed plan; however, here are the essentials:
- Four to six weeks prior, you must stop smoking entirely. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and complicates healing.
- You can pause supplements that can increase bleeding. Some of them are Vitamin E and fish oil.
- Please inform me if you are taking any medication during the consultation, and I will advise accordingly.
- On the day before surgery, focus on hydration.
- Pack a bag with loose, comfortable clothing; button-down shirts are best, as they allow for easy dressing without having to lift your arms overhead.
- And remember, you cannot drive yourself home, so arrange for a friend or family member to be there for you.
VASER Science in Action
I can complete the VASER procedure in about 2 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia. It is precise and methodical, and you can go home on the same day:
VASER (36kHz ultrasound) creates cavitation bubbles that rupture adipocyte membranes selectively. Tumescent formula reduces bleeding by 50%. Probe emulsifies 0.8kg fat/litre; gentle suction prevents contour irregularities. The result is 40% less swelling, and 92% satisfaction at 1 year.
Procedure | Fat Removal | Swelling Days | Skin Retraction | Return-to-Work |
VASER Lipo | 3-5L, 4x cells | 7-10 | 30% collagen boost | Day 5 |
Traditional | 2-3L, tearing | 14-21 | Minimal | Day 10 |
CoolSculpting | 20-25%/session | None | None | Immediate |
Emsculpt | None (muscle) | None | None | Immediate |
The Mumbai Reality: Recovery & Aftercare
Let’s be honest about recovery in our city.
Faja: It is necessary to wear the Faja after surgery. It is a compression garment that reduces swelling when worn 24/7 in the first week of surgery.
Air conditioning is your best friend: Sweating is common in Mumbai’s humidity, but it can also irritate. Stay in an air-conditioned room for the first week or use moisture-wicking liners to stay dry and comfortable.
Low-Sodium Diet: Avoid water retention by switching to a low-sodium diet. Home-cooked meals, such as khichdi and dals, are excellent for healing.
Keep the circulation flowing by walking: Avoid staying in bed all day; instead, walk around your house every few hours to keep your circulation flowing.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Most importantly, the lymphatic drainage massage is non-negotiable if you want smooth, lump-free results. It pushes out trapped fluid and prevents “fibrosis” (the formation of hard lumps).
The Timeline to Results
My patients often ask me this question after the procedure: “Doctor, how long until I see the results?” Here is a realistic answer about the healing journey after Vaser liposuction:
- Day 1: Expect soreness, not sharp pain. It usually feels very similar to the stiffness you feel after a heavy deadlift session.
- Day 3: Take a shower. We usually begin your lymphatic massages to help flush out fluid during this period.
- Week 1: By now, nearly 50% of the swelling has usually subsided. Just remember to stay in the AC to keep your compression garment comfortable.
- Month 1: You are back to your desk job and social life. You will see approximately 70% of the result, although some internal healing is still ongoing.
- Month 3: This is the big reveal. The swelling has completely settled, and the chiselled definition we etched is finally obvious.

Protecting Indian Skin
I am more careful with patients who have darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV and V), as there is a risk of PIH (scars turning dark).
VASER helps here because the entry points are tiny (2-3mm). I place these small incisions in natural creases or discreet areas, such as the bikini line, so they remain unseen. The scars will fade to invisibility if you follow a strict sun-protection routine.
VASER vs. Traditional Lipo vs. Alternatives
VASER Liposuction is best for high-definition sculpting. It offers precision etching and skin tightening, though it requires high surgeon skill.
Traditional Liposuction is better suited for bulk removal. It is quicker but causes more bruising and carries a higher risk of uneven results.
CoolSculpting is for mild bulges. It is non-invasive but offers no etching and minimal reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can VASER fix a "hard" beer belly?
No. VASER targets subcutaneous fat, the soft layer you can pinch. A hard potbelly is usually visceral fat located deep within the abdomen. That requires changes to your diet and lifestyle. I can determine which type you have during a consultation.
How much fat can you actually remove?
In a single session, I can safely remove between 3 and 5 litres of fat. That is a significant amount. Because we eliminate those specific fat cells, that bulk is gone for good.
Is the result really permanent?
Yes. Once we reach adulthood, our bodies no longer produce new fat cells. The ones I remove are gone forever. However, if you gain significant weight later, the remaining fat cells can still expand, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key.
What are those fluid pockets (Seromas) I read about?
A seroma is just a small collection of fluid under the skin. This occurs in approximately 5-10% of cases when the lymphatic system is disrupted. The good news? We largely prevent this by using compression garments and ensuring you get your lymphatic massages.
What is the success rate?
It is very high. Clinical studies show a 92% satisfaction rate one year after surgery. The best results are achieved by patients who have good skin elasticity and maintain a stable weight after the procedure.
